Community Relations

Bike Rodeo

Ferguson Township Police host an annual Bike Rodeo to help teach children the importance of bike safety. Bicycle officers lead children through a safety course, teaching them lifelong bicycle safe operation skills. Certified bicycle technicians are available to check the children’s bike safety features, and certified seat belt technicians check child car seats. In addition, participants are able to register their bikes to assist in their return in the event they are lost or stolen. View our Bike Rodeo Photo Gallery Archive of images from previous events.

Community Relations

Community Policing

The Ferguson Township Police believe in strong community involvement, and therefore have adopted a Community Policing Strategy. Each officer within the department is encouraged to solve community problems through community partnerships. Examples include our involvement with community organizations to increase safety for victims of domestic violence, sexual assault, or stalking situations, as well as those with mental health problems or intellectual disabilities. Additionally, officers regularly visit our schools, patrol on bikes, and offer ride-alongs and tours of the Police Department, which include a safety topic of interest. Officers also participate in the Citizen's Police Academy for seniors and Camp Cadet for youth ages 12 to 14. To schedule a presentation, or just ask a question, email the Police Department.

Bike Patrol Unit

The Ferguson Township currently has four officers and a sergeant assigned to the bicycle unit. Bicycles are stationed at strategic locations within the township for quick deployment. The unit is particularly effective in patrolling complexes, parks, and bike paths. The unit has also been used for locating lost kids as well as just getting out to talk to citizens.  If you have any questions about this unit, please contact us.

Crime Prevention

The Ferguson Township Police strive to be proactive and prefer to prevent crime before it occurs, when possible. Crime prevention is a safer, less expensive, and more responsible way to keep our community safe. The police cannot be everywhere, however, and depend on your help. We encourage you to report any suspicious activity when it is happening. Please do not feel that your information is not important, or that it will distract us from a more important task; we triage all calls and information. If you have a question or would like to make a police report, please contact us by email or call (814) 237-1172. Please note that our email is checked only during regular business hours.

Centre County Law Enforcement Memorial Ceremony

The Department participates each year in this ceremony honoring law officers nationwide who have died in the past year while serving in the line of duty. The department is joined at the ceremony by officers from the Penn State and State College Borough Police Departments, as well as representatives from other law enforcement and correctional facilities. It is held during National Police Officers Week, in recognition of Peace Officers Memorial Day.

PA Special Olympics Law Enforcement Torch Run 

Ferguson Township Police participated in the 2019 Law Enforcement Torch Run (LETR) for Special Olympics Pennsylvania, which unites officers from law enforcement agencies and corrections departments across the state in support of Special Olympics.

The three-day, 150-mile Torch Run begins in Pittsburgh the first week in June and concludes with the lighting of the torch at Opening Ceremonies on the Penn State campus.

Bike Safety at Centre County Down Syndrome Buddy Walk

Ferguson Township Police Sergeant Ryan Hendrick and Officer Caleb Clouse set up a Bike Rodeo bike safety course at the 2016 Centre Region Down Syndrome Buddy Walk® on Saturday, October 15 at Medlar Field. They provided bikes specially designed to help challenged riders as well as helmets for those participating. Members of the Penn State Baseball Team assisted at the 8th annual event, sponsored by the Centre County Down Syndrome Society in recognition of Down Syndrome Awareness Month.

Prescription Drug Collection

The Ferguson Township Police Department is one of six year-round prescription drop-off sites in Centre County. Located in the Police Department office at 3147 Research Drive—the MedReturn box provides a safe, convenient, responsible and confidential way to dispose of prescription drugs. The new site is part of a local law enforcement and community initiative to educate the general public about the current opioid addiction crisis and the potential for abuse of medications. Learn more.

Extra Patrols on Trick or Treat Night

Ferguson Township Police served as helpers on Trick or Treat Night, October 31, by providing extra patrols through Ferguson Township neighborhoods. Officers stopped and visited with trick or treaters and their families and offered glow stick bracelets to help ensure they would be seen in the dark. Officers also patrolled the area for vandals.

Centre Region Parks & Recreation's So Long, Summer Shindig

Ferguson Township thanks CRPR for the opportunity to bring a patrol car to its So Long, Summer Shindig at Tom Tudek Memorial Park on Saturday, August 25. Ferguson Township Police Officer Mike Lamb turned the flashing lights on his patrol car, allowed kids (of all ages) to sit in the driver's seat, and let them hold the police shield and a police vest to show them how heavy it is.
