Resources for Mental Health & Mental Illness

1 in 5 mental illness

2020 has been a tough year and mental health issues are on the rise. Nearly one in five U.S. adults live with a mental illness. Mental illnesses include many different conditions that vary in degree of severity, ranging from mild to moderate to severe.

Serious Mental Illness (SMI) is defined as a mental, behavioral, or emotional disorder resulting in serious functional impairment, which substantially interferes with or limits one or more major life activities.  It is estimated that SMI affects roughly one in twenty-five U.S. adults.

On average, in the U.S., approximately 132 people die from suicide every day.  In Pennsylvania, approximately 2,000 people die from suicide every year.

It is important to know the warning signs of someone who may be thinking of suicide:

  • Isolating from friends and family;
  • Increased use of alcohol or drugs;
  • Withdrawing from activities;
  • Giving away prized possessions;
  • Sleeping too little or too much;
  • Visiting or calling people to say goodbye;
  • Increased aggression and many others.
