Keep Your Pets Hydrated

Dog drinking water to stay hydrated

It has been a hot summer here in Centre County and a good time to enjoy the outdoors. Whenever you are walking, hiking, or just hanging out in the sun, there's a good chance your furry friends join in on the summer fun.The Ferguson Township Police Department would like to provide some tips on making sure your four-legged family members are well hydrated.

  1. Look for the signs when your pet is dehydrated. Dehydration can cause vomiting, loss of energy and even loss of appetite.
  2. Pets need about 1 ounce of water per 1 pound of their body weight each day. For example, if your cat weighs 8 pounds, they need 8 ounces of water.
  3. If your cat or dog doesn't drink enough water, add some water into their food. Some pets may even like the moisturized food more!
  4. Be sure to have a water supply for your pet wherever you go. An easy way to do this is to bring a collapsible bowl and an additional water bottle for your pet.
  5. Find a shady spot nearby where your pet can rest and cool off. After a day in the sun, make sure your pet can lay on a cool surface or near the AC.

It is important for all of us to safely enjoy the summer by taking precautions. The same goes for our pets! Just remember, if you are thirsty, your pet is too!
