Annual Street Tree Opportunity

In an effort to increase canopy coverage and provide residents an opportunity for trees, Ferguson Township is announcing its annual offering for an all-expense paid street tree to qualifying residential and business properties for the spring of 2024.

To request street trees in your right-of-way, contact the Township Arborist at arborist@twp.ferguson.pa.us or call (814) 238-4651. The Arborist will evaluate the planting strip or lawn area adjacent to your property and identify planting opportunities. If conditions are suitable, trees will be procured, installed, and maintained at no additional cost to the requestor.

Requestors will be provided an opportunity to provide some input regarding species by choosing from a predetermined list of trees. The size class of tree to be installed will be determined by the planting space available.

There are a few location requirements that have to be identified before trees are installed. In order to minimize damage to sidewalks and other infrastructure, trees cannot be planted in boulevard strips less than 4 feet wide. Other restrictions include: no planting less than 50 feet from an intersection or a fire hydrant and no less than 10 feet from driveway apron or street light. Utilities may play a role in location and availability as well.

Trees benefit our community by improving air and water quality, moderating temperatures, reducing storm water runoff, providing habitat for wildlife, and increasing property values. Do your part to support our community by taking advantage of this community investment opportunity.

A limited number of trees are available, so don’t hesitate to get on the list today. Request window closes November 30th.

Please remember, a Permit is required to perform work on Township owned street trees. These trees are generally located in the Right-of-Way between the sidewalk and curb. Some Rights-of-Way are not easily identifiable. A call to the Township office can help you identify the responsible party.
