Watch Out for Root Rot

Tree Roots

With the heavy rains that the Centre Region has received over the past couple of weeks, it is important that residents keep an eye out for the decay of a plant's root system, better known as root rot.

Root rot affects any plant with a root system; indoor or outdoor plants, shrubs, and trees. It can be identified by poor tree growth, wilted or brown leaves, decaying branches, and an overall thinner tree canopy. This ailment can lead to affected trees collapsing, causing property damage. There are two known causes of root rot: poor drainage in soil and fungal infections.

It is best to contact a tree professional to diagnose root rot in property's trees. If you see any trees in Ferguson Township that are showing signs of root rot, contact the Township Arborist  at arborist@twp.ferguson.pa.us or (814) 238-4651.
