Out of the Cold: Centre County is an emergency shelter open from 8 p.m. to 7:30 a.m. every night from mid-October to early May.

Staffed almost entirely by volunteers, the host site rotates every two weeks. Each evening guests are welcomed warmly, served a hot meal, given a cot, warm blankets, and a place to sleep. Breakfast is served in the morning and before leaving guests can register to return that evening.

Case management is also offered for guests who are in search of other services such as acquiring housing or help with job applications. Other services are also provided, such as obtaining ID cards, and providing resources to acquire medical insurance and SNAP benefits. Linking guests with mental health or addiction counselors is also provided by Out of the Cold volunteers and caseworkers.

Recently, Out of the Cold has raised over $200k to support a new shelter at 318 S. Atherton St. that will allow for consistent nightly stays for guests, and will no longer require guests and the organization to move bi-weekly. These new renovations will allow for 30 guests to stay at the location, and will provide stability for guests and the organization. Renovations will be complete in the timeframe of Spring/Summer 2022.
