Ferguson Township Drafting an Ordinance Imposing Impact Fee on Single-Use Plastic Bags

Plastic bags

At its Regular Meeting on May 20, the Ferguson Township Board of Supervisors directed Township staff to prepare a draft ordinance imposing an impact fee on single-use plastic bags. The motion passed 3 to 1, with Supervisor Richard Killian dissenting.

Should an ordinance governing the use of plastic bags pass, businesses in Ferguson Township would be directed to charge an impact fee to any customer who shops with a single-use plastic bag instead of reusable bags. The fee would apply to each single-use plastic bag. The business would collect and retain the fee from the customer.

The draft ordinance is tentatively scheduled to be presented to the Board of Supervisors at its Regular Meeting at 7 pm Monday, July 1. The public is welcome to attend the discussion.
