On Tuesday, February 18, the Jana Marie Foundation and Mid-State Literacy Council will present “What If …” a night of fun and inspiration with author/illustrator Michelle Nelson-Schmidt. The free family event starts at 5:30 p.m. at Grace Lutheran Church in State College.

The evening will feature book readings, live music, activities, refreshments, and more. Nelson-Schmidt’s books, which include Jonathan James and the Whatif Monster, Cordelia, and more, focus on building confidence, mental wellness, and following your dreams.

“Research supports the positive benefits of reading,” says Amy Wilson, executive director of Mid-State Literacy Council. “Reading can put our brains into a state like meditation and our bodies into deep relaxation. Reading lowers stress levels, raises self-esteem, and decreases rates of depression in people who read often. We are excited to work together with the Jana Marie Foundation to support mental wellness.”

Nelson-Schmidt travels the country meeting children and presenting her books and artwork, and sharing her empowering message of believing in yourself and following your dreams. She began writing and illustrating picture books as a single mom, and she painted pet portraits to supplement her income as a freelance graphic designer. She told Publishers Weekly in a 2018 article that she had “painted more 800 paintings for people in that time. Not only did that really hone my painting style but it gave me confidence to think that if people would buy my art, they might also buy my books.”

Known for connecting children and promoting social emotional skills and well-being, Nelson-Schmidt offers an evening unlike any other.

“Michelle’s whimsical books take us into a world of imagination and fun,” says Jana Marie Foundation founder and director Marisa Vicere. “We are excited to partner with Mid-State Literacy Council for this interactive event that explores the love of reading with mental wellness and Michelle’s uplifting messages. Children of all ages will laugh, dance, and enjoy this magical evening.”
