Centre County 2021 Hazard Mitigation Plan Adopted by Ferguson Township

Hazard Mitigation Plan

Centre County's 2021 Hazard Mitigation Plan is now the official Hazard Mitigation Plan of Ferguson Township. During their regular meeting on July 6, the Ferguson Township Board of Supervisors adopted this plan by resolution.

Hazard mitigation planning is vital to community stability: it reduces the loss of life and property to minimize the impact of disaster by identifying common natural disaster risks and vulnerabilities. Ferguson Township and Centre County as a whole is most vulnerable to natural hazards (flooding, ice storms, & extreme drought) and human-caused hazards (ignited wildfires & traffic accidents). The Hazard Mitigation Plan was developed in 2020 by the Centre County Office of Emergency Services and the Centre County Office of Planning & Community Development in conjunction with local municipal officials, institutional stakeholders, and residents of Centre County.

Shawn Kauffman, Emergency Management Coordinator said: “All six Centre Region municipalities (Borough of State College, College Township, Ferguson Township, Halfmoon Township, Harris Township, & Patton Township) have completed adoption of the 2021 Centre County Hazard Mitigation Plan (HMP) making each municipality eligible for FEMA Hazard Mitigation Assistant grant programs. The process of updating and adopting the HMP, which is done every 5 years, provides a framework for making the County more resilient during an emergency or disaster.”
