Scam Utilizing Local Police Officer's Name

FTPD

State College, PA – Over the last few days, the Ferguson Township Police Department has received complaints that someone is impersonating as one of our officers via telephone call in an attempted scam.

Please consider the following guidance if you are ever contacted by someone advising you that they are law enforcement.  If you receive calls from someone claiming to be a police officer, never provide personal, bank account or financial information.  Law enforcement will never ask for Green Dot/MoneyPak cards, Apple iTunes cards, or money orders for payment of a fine.  Officers will direct you to the courts for any payment.

If there is ever any question to the legitimacy of a police officer, simply ask for their name, badge number, as well as agency and callback number.  Verify the callback number on your own through an internet search, and contact them back only after verifying the legitimacy.  Any police officer will be glad to offer this information and will encourage you to verify their identification.

For further information on this matter, please contact the Ferguson Township Police Department at 1-800-479-0050 or police@twp.ferguson.pa.us
