Police have determined that wild fox poses no danger

Throughout this year, the Ferguson Township Police Department (FTPD) has received a high volume of concerned telephone calls about a small red fox in the area of West College Avenue between Blue Course Drive and Corl Street. The FTPD appreciates residents’ concern for the animal.

Police would like to make concerned residents aware that officers have been able to closely observe the fox in question. Although the fox does appear to be smaller than most foxes and has some signs of mange in its tail, there have been no reports of it behaving violently or posing a danger to other animals and humans.  The fox has always run whenever someone gets too close to it, which is its normal response, and therefore shows no symptoms of rabies.  When a wild animal poses no danger to anyone, police officers will not attempt to capture or euthanize it.  Nor will the Pennsylvania Game Commission.

“Foxes out during the day are no cause for alarm,” according to The Humane Society of the United States’ website. If you want to send a fox family on its way or are worried about rabies, the site offers additional helpful information.
