November has the Highest Risk of Deer Collisions

Deer on Road

November is known to have the highest risk of deer collisions. Not only is it damage to your vehicle, it might put others on the road in danger.

Everyone’s natural instinct is to swerve to avoid collision with the animal but this might cause larger problems, especially on ice. If a crash is inevitable, it is best to apply your brakes and limit the damage. Here are a couple of tips of help you avoid the situation:

  • Ensure your headlights are clean and working
  • Stay alert in areas near creeks and lakes
  • If you see an animal in the road, brake firmly and sound the horn

If you do hit a deer:

  • Pull off the road and turn on hazard lights
  • Call local law enforcement
  • Assess your vehicle for damage or leaking fluids

Dusk and dawn are where most crashes take place. Be sure to be safe when you are out on these rural roads.
