With a summer like no other upon us, the Jana Marie Foundation is ready to help young people have a fun and inspiring summer with its variety of online programs, including the foundation’s first summer camp offering!

Explore Summer Camp is a five-week virtual camp for sixth through 12th grade students. The camps will meet online for two hours, 10 a.m. to noon, on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday each week of camp, and sessions will include interactive activities that will help students connect with others using art, music, movement, and other creative techniques.

“Teens thrive when they feel connected to themselves and others, and these feelings of connection build self-esteem, self-realization, citizenship, and resiliency,” says Ali Turley, Jana Marie Foundation Program Specialist. “During a time when we are encouraged to keep more physical space from each other and limit our in-person interactions it is especially important for young people to build connection in other ways. Explore will give teens an opportunity to build skills in creative ways while having fun with other teens and adults.”

  • Week one of the camp is “Grow” and will be held June 16-18. The camp is for female students and, through drawing and poetry, students will explore their roots, their strengths, and how do they nourish themselves for growth.
  • Week two is “Journey” and will be held July 7-9. The camp is for all genders and, through writing and mapping, students will explore how to turn their dreams into reality.
  • Week three is “Express” and will be held July 21-23. The camp is for female students and will explore all the ways people can express themselves and communicate with others, including through developing playlists, making comics, and creating tactile artwork.
  • Week four is “Play” and will be held August 4-6. The camp is for female students and celebrates the importance of play and having fun to our well-being.
  • Week five is “Share” and is tentatively scheduled for August 18-20. The camp is for female students and explores the impact of sharing ourselves with others and being part of a community has in our lives. Activities will include the development of a service action such as writing letters or creating artwork for other people.

Each camp session is free but registration is required. To register, visit janamariefoundation.org.

In addition to Explore Summer Camp, the foundation will continue its Shine and Rise group meetings. Shine, for girls in grades 6 through 8, will meet online 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. the second and fourth Monday of each month. Rise, for students in grades 9 through 12, will meet online 11 a.m. to noon the second and fourth Tuesdays of each month.
