College Township – 58,880 pounds of hazardous material was collected during the Household Hazardous Waste Collection Event held at the Centre County Recycling and Refuse Authority this weekend.  Close to 1,000 vehicles brought hazardous chemicals to the annual free drop off event.  Residents from 33 of the county’s 35 municipalities participated.  We also had a few travel in from surrounding counties.

Comments from residents were extremely positive.  An email from a Ferguson Township resident read, “I participated in your Household Hazardous Waste Event today.  That is an incredibly well-organized and efficient event - the signage you put up is incredible - great job!!  Thanks for holding this event - it's a great service to the community.”

This year’s event was a little different than usual as pre-registration was required.  Attendees also were asked to wear a mask, keep their windows closed and stay in their vehicles to maintain a safe event for all.  We received many thumbs up and happy waves as cars left the facility after dropping off their material.

“Not only did Centre Countians show their care for the environment but also for each other by going out of their way to follow protocols put in place by the Authority.” said Joanne Shafer, the Authority’s Deputy Executive Director/Recycling Coordinator.

The event was co-sponsored by Centre County Recycling and Refuse Authority, the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) and the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture.  MXI of Langhorne, PA was the successful contractor.

If you missed this collection, look for information next spring.  The Centre County Recycling and Refuse Authority will be holding another Household Hazardous Waste Collection Event on April 30 & May 1, 2021.  For tips to reduce the amount of household hazardous waste in your home, visit www.centrecountyrecycles.org.
