Schlow Library joining us for Coffee & Conversation

Date: April 20, 2018

Residents with questions about spring operations and other services are invited to Coffee & Conversation with Ferguson Township -- hosted by Giant at Northland Center from 8 to 9:30 am on Saturday, April 21.

An informal gathering of Township residents, Coffee & Conversation is an opportunity to meet with Dave Pribulka, Township Manager, Chris Albright, Chief of Police, and other key Township staff to offer suggestions, seek answers, discuss any questions or concerns specific to your community, and chat about living in the Township.

Ferguson Township is delighted to welcome Schlow Library to this Coffee & Conversation. Learn about upcoming library programs and events, how you can use the library 24/7 by visiting its website, and other special benefits of being a card carrying Schlow Library patron. Those of you who will be grocery shopping afterwards may want to ask Schlow about its collection of cookbooks and other culinary resources.

Bring your questions. Coffee is on the house and there is no need to register to attend. For more information, contact Pribulka at (814) 238-4651.

Opening up about Privacy
Schlow event during “Choose Privacy Week” looks at problematic technologies

People who you don’t know are getting to know you pretty well! From shoppers’ club cards and Facebook, to the cars we drive and phones we use — the data we are creating is being used by governments, advertisers, and business strategists to build your personal profile.

But what do we do when the data being gathered crosses the ethical line? How do we help protect ourselves from harm, whether it’s unintentional or purposeful?

Schlow Centre Region Library is hosting a special pop-up free event, “Privacy, Profiles, and Profits,” from 6:30 to 7:30pm Thursday, May 3. Technology guru, professor, and digital freedom fighter Sascha Meinrath will talk about data mining and how to protect yourself from problematic technologies.

Meinrath is the Palmer Chair in Telecommunications at Penn State. He has been named to the Time magazine “Tech 40” as one of the most influential figures in technology. He also is a recipient of the Public Knowledge IP3 Award for excellence in public interest advocacy. He has been a leading voice calling for accountability over governmental spying programs and is at the forefront of policy debates over how Congress and the White House should rein in the cybersecurity-industrial complex.

“Privacy, Profiles, and Profits” is taking place during “Choose Privacy Week.” This year’s theme is “Big Data Is Watching You.”
