October 31 will be Trick-or-Treat Night in Ferguson Township

Date: October 9, 2018

The Ferguson Township Board of Supervisors has approved Wednesday, October 31, as Trick-or-Treat Night in the Township. The hours will be 6 - 8 pm. The Centre Region Council of Governments also approved this schedule for Trick-or-Treat Night in the Centre Region.

Ferguson Township Police will conduct extra patrols to help keep trick-or-treaters safe. The Ferguson Township Police Department offers these suggestions for keeping Trick or Treat Night safe for every family who participates:

1. Go where the porch lights are on – Go only to safe, well-lit neighborhoods and don’t go to any houses with lights out. Carry a flashlight for added safety.

2. Keep a safe distance -- Don’t go inside anyone’s house (not unless you are invited in by a family you know and a vigilant adult is with you).

3. Take a responsible adult with you – Young children should never go trick-or-treating alone.

4. Cross streets safely – Hold hands with supervising adults and always look both ways.

5. Tell parents where you’re going – Teens, plan your course and keep your parents informed. Carry your cell phones so that you are easily reached.

6. Travel in groups and stay on the main streets -- Don’t cut through back streets or fields.

7. Refrain from distracted walking -- No texting or using your cell phone while walking.

8. Don’t prank – vandalism such as throwing eggs at a house is not only wrong but illegal.

9. Respect animals – Mistreatment of animals such as cats is unacceptable and illegal.

10. Follow costume safety guidelines – Make sure your costume is flame retardant and has no tripping hazards. Use reflector strips for visibility. Wear masks you can see through, not only in front but from side to side.

11. Adhere to scheduled times and curfews –  Trick-Or-Treat Night starts at 6 pm and ends at 8 pm.

12. Motorists, use extra caution -- Drive slowly, being aware children are preoccupied and may not be watching as they should. Ferguson Township Police will schedule extra patrols to help keep participating families safe during Trick-Or-Treat Night.

13. Be careful what you eat -- wait until you get home before enjoying your treats and check them carefully before eating.
