Community Outreach and Education

Our Township Arborist, Lance King, plays an essential community role in promoting the health of our Township street and park trees.  As such, he organizes educational events for Arbor Day.

The Ferguson Township Board of Supervisors proclaimed May 5, 2019 as Arbor Day in Ferguson Township.
It rained continuously as volunteers gathered to celebrate Arbor Day in Ferguson Township with a pollinator garden planting at the Township’s passive park, Songbird Sanctuary. But the rain didn’t deter these volunteers from doing what they could – mostly raking and distributing mulch. The volunteers included youth from the Ferguson Township Elementary Environmental Club, Ferguson Township Board of Supervisors and Tree Commission members, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Central PA Pheasants Forever, and Penn State Master Gardeners. The group had planned to plant trees, shrubs and plants, but Penn State Master Gardeners Pam and Doug Ford determined the ground was too soaked for newly planted roots to survive. Board of Supervisors Chair Steve Miller read an Arbor Day proclamation, one of the four criteria for sustaining the Township’s designation as a Tree City USA.

The Arbor Day Foundation designated Ferguson Township a Tree City USA for the third consecutive year.
